A Few Old Buildings..

Western Colorado Has Quite a History!

I apologize for the business highlight last week that no longer seems to be open. The Business Highlight section is reserved for businesses that pay the small sponsorship fee to be featured. Since this newsletter is relatively new, I do not have a sponsor lined up for every single week. During those weeks, I look for a small business to highlight and that article had been sent in to me as suggestion. I will do better in the future to vet all my sources.

106-year-old Glade Park Schoolhouse

The Coates Creek Schoolhouse was built 106 years ago in 1919 and moved to Glade Park in 1926.

The one-room log building served students grades 1 through 12 for several decades until the ’60s.

Susie Roehm has lived in Glade Park for 42 years. She bought the school in the 1950s and gave it to Glade Park locals to both use and maintain after classes stopped.

Since then, locals have redone ceiling beams and patched up walls. They are planning to replace the floor this year.

She says her mother-in-law helped get the schoolhouse onto the Historical Society in the ’90s and also started hosting events, like pancake breakfasts and chili suppers (that still take place today) to raise money for these repairs.

Repairs that keep a place full of memories alive for some in particular, like Dennis Carns who graduated from eighth grade here in 1959. He was the recipient of the last eighth grade diploma from this school in D51.

Rathbone Hotel Receives Historic Colorado Award

The Rathbone Hotel, a building with over a century of history, was recently awarded by History Colorado.

The hotel, 33 S. Cascade Ave., will receive the People’s Choice Award after the developer’s dedication to preserving the building’s historical significance. The award will be presented April 2 during History Colorado’s Stephen H. Hart Awards celebration.

History Colorado is an organization and agency of the State of Colorado under the Department of Higher Educations. The organization’s goal is preserving the state’s history, according to its website.

The building, completed in 1909, was the home of the Knights of Pythias, a fraternal organization founded in 1864. Over the years, the main floor saw a variety of businesses including Hupp Furniture, Safeway and Mash Appliances.

But a fire in 2012 threatened the building’s future. At the time, the structure was the home of Budget Line Furniture and residents living in the upstairs apartments had to relocate after the fire.

The building was unused for almost a decade until developers Clay Bales and Jason Raible saw a way to preserve the structure’s history and turned it into a hotel. The building was named The Rathbone to honor the Knights of Pythias found Justus Henry Rathbone.
