Mesa County Animal Services taking newspaper donations
Mesa County Animal Services is taking newspaper donations.
The donations go toward providing comfort and cleanliness for their animals. Dogs in their shelter that are being potty trained mostly rely on newspapers to keep their area clean.
MCAS said it’s a constant effort to maintain the number of papers needed to line crates and catch waste. They said with the decrease in popularity of physical newspapers, they have had to rely on donations from the community.
They also said it helps them financially, as well as with efficiency. “We can just pull the newspapers out. It’s kind of a speedy thing and it’s a lot cheaper to get free donated newspapers than it is to buy matting for the bottom of the cages,” said Kevin Bozarth, the Lead Animal Services Officer with MCAS.
Donations can be made in person at the Mesa County Animal Services building located at 971A Coffman Road, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Pair of De Beque Dragon Athletes ink college commitments
De Beque High School has turned into a colligate athlete factory recently, and two more De Beque Dragons , Ava Vines and Allyson Sandidge joined the elite two percent of high school athletes to play in college.
Ava Vines is following in the footsteps of her sibling Scottie Vines, to take her talents to a division one Track & Field Team, heading over to the Front Range, to compete for the Colorado State Rams.
“Joy and definitely a lot of relief like I feel like that weight has been lifted off to my shoulder, you know. Yeah. Now I can just go through the season and try to hit those PR’s, and then I’ll go to college and get to do what I love,” Vines said.
Sandidge will be heading to Rangely, Colo. to play Volleyball for Colorado Northwestern Community College.
“It means a lot because, like, me and Ava have played on teams, I had five girls, six girls, three girls, so it’s a huge accomplishment for us both to be going to the next level with such a small start,” Sandidge said.
“We’ve been going to school together since we were really little and definitely a day I wanted to share with her,” Sandidge said.
“We have planned this for a while. We’re like, we have to do our signing days together. But yeah, truly special. We’ve been friends since we were like 6 and yeah, it’s just really special moment,” Vines said.
