🏡 Homeowner Tip of the Week

It’s farmers market season in Western Colorado, and nothing beats fresh-picked produce. But even the most beautiful fruits and veggies need a good rinse before eating. Dirt, bacteria, and even natural pesticides can cling to the surface.

Quick Tip:
Skip the soap—just use cool water and a veggie brush for firmer items like potatoes or cucumbers. For softer produce like berries or peaches, a gentle soak and rinse will do the trick.

Pro Move: Wash right before eating, not when you bring them home. This keeps produce fresher, longer.

Western Slope Triple Play to raise funds for domestic violence survivors

The Western Slope Triple Play, Colorado’s premier three-day women’s golf tournament, will take place at 8 a.m. on Friday through Sunday at Tiara Rado Golf Course located at 2057 S Broadway.

The tournament will feature 54-hole stroke play and welcomes female golfers from across the region to compete or bid on a selection of silent auction items.

Open to players with a current USGA Handicap Index, the entry fee is $375 per person. The fee will include green fees, cart, lunch and prize money. All proceeds from the tournament will raise funds for Hilltop Community Resource’s Latimer House. The Latimer House is an emergency shelter and crisis support for victims of intimate partner violence and sexual assault in Mesa, Montrose, Delta and Ouray Counties.

In 2024, the tournament raised $61,530 for the shelter.

Local Community

REW receives $8,500 grant from CPW for community stewardship

RiversEdge West (REW) has been awarded an $8,500 grant from Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s (CPW) Partners in the Outdoors program which will help fund REW’s River Stewardship Program.

The program works to bring the Mesa County community together for the restoration of riverside ecosystems across the valley.

To do this, REW hosts volunteer events from March to November when families, outdoor enthusiast, and students work together to build a culture of stewardship, improve nature access and boost habitat health. Volunteers will plant native species while removing invasive weeds and repairing trails.

How 88-year-old Montrose man Charlie Winger climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro

For most people, climbing even something as small as a tree is a daunting task.

For most, climbing a mountain is a challenge.

For nearly everyone, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is nearly unthinkable.

But for those past the age of 80, climbing any mountain is virtually impossible.

That’s except for one Montrose man who simply beat the odds.

Charlie Winger is not your typical 88-year-old.
