News
Record-breaking weekend potential increasing across western slope
Today is going to be a potentially record-breaking day of warmth for western Colorado as temperatures exceed the mid eighties at its warmest points today. Expect sunny skies with high temperatures near 85 degrees. Tonight, conditions will remain clear with the lowest points only hitting the low fifties. While there may be a slight breeze, there is nothing standing out to make it feel gusty.
Record warm temperatures move in today and again for Saturday. Widespread wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph, if not higher, move in Saturday across much of the area. These winds, along with low humidities, may create hazardous fire weather conditions if fuels are deemed critical. A cold front moves through on Sunday bringing light precipitation chances to the northern and central Divide mountains. No impacts expected. Temperatures remain above normal through the seven-day forecast.
Southwesterly flow will continue to usher in warm air causing high temperature to reach 15 to 20 degrees above the usual mid April values. Some records may be broken this afternoon with these temperatures. Some gusty winds will also materialize over the northern valleys reaching around 25 mph in the afternoon. Dry air remains in place so critical fire weather conditions are likely for the northern valleys. However fuels have not been deemed critical. Tomorrow, cloud coverage will begin developing over the afternoon hours, and temperatures will start to dip Sunday afternoon. However, it’s only getting down to the upper sixties, so expect a day that feels closer to spring on Sunday.
The Palisade International Honeybee Festival kicks off tomorrow morning, and it’s shaping up to be a great day for that. Come down for free events, and stay for the warm conditions! Fore more information on the events going on and how your local forecaster will be involved, visit our website ‘westernslopenow.com’. I will also be live from Palisade tonight with more information!
Overall, expect a lovely day today to kick off your weekend!
Jerry Derby gets us ready for the CMU Rodeo
We are getting ready and excited for the Colorado Mesa Rodeo April 11 and 12, beginning 6 p.m. Friday at the Mesa County Fairgrounds.
Big Will Levenson makes his way to Rocky Mountain Hats and Boots to meet store owner and founder Jerry Derby.
Derby, 82, is a former bull rider and a rodeo connoisseur. He gets us excited for the Rodeo this weekend and gives us a special tour of the store — showing how hats are made from scratch in store.

Local Community
Grand Junction High School opens new Tiger Community Gym
Grand Junction High School held the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for their new Tiger Community Gymnasium on April 10.
The gym is part of the construction at GJHS that came from a bond in 2021. It used to be part of their old school building, and now it’s the campus’ third gym. Dr. Brian Hill, the Superintendent of District 51, said that using part of the old building was more efficient.
The space will be used by GJHS students, including physical education classes and sports teams. It can also be used by other schools around the district if needed. “Even within the school, it’s hard to even utilize gym space because you have so many student groups, so many clubs. And so having this third gym here at the school will help be able to schedule those for the school,” said Dr. Hill.
Outside of school hours, the gym can also be used by locals in the community. The district said this can promote community health. “We’re always looking for ways to get kids active and living healthier lifestyles. And so again if we have additional gym space, that’s just an additional opportunity for students to be able to take advantage of that,” said Dr. Hill.
