Mesa County Sheriff’s Office give tips on Social Security scams
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) -Mesa County Sheriff’s Office says Social Security scams are common across the country, as well as locally in Mesa County.
MCSO warns about scammers calling over the phone asking for your social security number. They said no government agency will call to ask for a social security number over the phone or through text.
They said one of the best things to do is be proactive. “The best measure to fight these scams is preventative, right? So, making sure that they’re aware of what type of scams are available, breaking that contact, doing what they can so they’re not sending their hard-earned life savings away to a point where we can’t recover it,” said Sergeant Ross Young.
Young also warns that anyone can be affected by these scams. “People fall victim to them all the time. It’s not that people are gullible, right? But we live in a society where if somebody calls and identifies themselves as a government agent or with a local law enforcement agency, they tend to believe that,” said Young.
MCSO holds a class for scam and fraud prevention once a month. If you want to learn more, click here.
Caprock Academy student brings weapon to school
A Caprock Academy student brought a weapon onto the school’s campus Thursday morning, prompting a shelter-in-place.
The weapon was reported by another student at the school, initiating action by administrators, who — along with the school security team and Grand Junction Police Department — located the weapon and detained the student, according to a news release from Caprock.

Business Highlight

Snooks Bottom BBQ
They have been operating from behind the car wash in Orchard Mesa for several years now. Soon, they will open in their location in Mama Ree’s on 7th and North. Here’s a full interview.
What inspired the move to your new location, and how has the transition been for your team and customers? When is/was the opening date at the new spot?
The opportunity to add a 2nd location with Mama Ree’s Cowboy Bar came out of left field. The Weckerly Family, (owners of MRCC) approached us as they were rebranding the space into a country themed bar and the pizza they were offering did not fit. Texas style BBQ would fit with their rebranding. Still working toward the opening date. Pending Health Dept approval. We are aiming toward an April 10th opening. Facilities are top notch and minimal work is needed to get up and going. Majority of the smoking process will be completed at our Orchard Mesa location and then delivered to the new location.
Have you made any changes to the menu or cooking process since the move, or can fans expect the same great BBQ they know and love?
BBQ offering will remain same. Sides will be changed to more custom offering now that we have a better equipped kitchen and refrigeration.
What sets your BBQ apart from other spots in town, and what’s the must-try item on your menu?
100% wood fired smoke. No gas or electricity. Smokers are world class. Used by top smokehouses in Texas. 16 month wait list to get a Moberg Smoker Brisket and Ribs go fast. Our sausage is smoked in brisket tallow and are terrific.
Have there been any challenges in setting up at the new location, and how have you overcome them?
We have not had serious challenges…yet. Figuring out the customer flow and adjusting the amount of product we smoke will be a big challenge. All goes smoother once a trend is developed. We are able to adapt quick.
What’s next for your restaurant—any special events, new menu items, or future plans we should know about?
We have entered into a growth phase after 5 years of building a business from scratch. We are very thankful for the Weckerly family and they have been so very accommodating and helpful in assisting us to take this step forward in our growth journey.

Athlete of the Week
Colorado Mesa’s stand out in the pool Agata Naskret has already climbed to the top of the mountain.
The Maverick Swimmer alread had national championships on her resume, being a part of multiple national championship winning relays, as well as individual national titles in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke.
All that was left, was to do it again at the National Championship Meet in Indianapolis, Ind.
“It was a little bit more pressure since I really wanted to win those events once again and I feel like once you are there ... it’s more expected from people to win them again,” Naskret said.
But before either of her individual event title defenses at Nationals, Nakret had to handle her business as part of the Mavs 400-yard Medley Relay Team and their title defense.
“But my main purpose of this was to go as fast as possible so I can make a huge gap. So the other teams is going to be harder for them. To actually reach us. Which eventually work,” Naskret said.
But the defending champ did more than just get things going for The Mavericks in the leadoff leg of the relay. The Maverick Backstroker was able to open up a huge lead for CMU on their way to defending their national title in the 400 yard medley relay and added another national title to her trophy case.
As for her leg of the relay, the leadoff leg and the 100-yard backstroke, Naskret set the DII record with a time of 51.53 seconds.
